The first school was built in 1870. It consisted of one adobe room with a dirt floor and no indoor plumbing. Eventually there were four schools built in the city, and by 1913 Anaheim’s school system was providing formal education to nearly 4,000 students.

During World War II, a submarine manufacturing facility took advantage of cheap energy and local supplies to provide for the United States military. The Submarine Manufacturing Company, which would eventually become the Anaheim Bay Company, was contracted to build over 100 submarines for the United States Navy.
The first Goodyear Blimp was built on of land off East Katella Avenue in 1927. Today that facility is known as the Goodyear Airship Operations Lighter-than-Air Base. Anaheim is now recognized as one of California’s major tourist destinations drawing in over 15 million visitors per year to Anaheim’s many attractions. Its history dates back to 1857 when Elias J. “Lucky” Baldwin bought 6,000 acres of land. Two years later in 1859, the first settlers arrived in the Anaheim area and began farming. By 1870, a small community had already begun to develop around the farmland (mainly because of all the orange groves), and this small town was named after its founder Baldwin.
Originally established as an agricultural community, by 1870 Anaheim’s population had grown to about 650 residents. However, this all changed in the early 1880s when the arrival of the railroad brought in tourists and helped to boost Anaheim’s economy. Tourism remains one of the most important aspects for Anaheim today as it is home to many museums and major attractions such as Disneyland Resort, The Anaheim Convention Center, and The Anaheim Ice complex.
