Angels’ Andrelton Simmons eyes rapid return from latest ankle sprain

ANAHEIM – Angels shortstop Andrelton Simmons missed his ninth consecutive game because of a sprained left ankle Monday. He missed 34 games in May and June with a similar injury, fulfilling his expectation of beating predictions that he would require much longer than a month to recover.

Simmons spouted similar rhetoric Monday. Manager Brad Ausmus recently predicted that Simmons would miss “at least a couple of weeks” this time around. Simmons still hasn’t practiced any baseball activities since he sustained the injury Aug. 2. Yet he seemed to dismiss the notion that the latest ankle sprain would sideline him much longer.

“I don’t have any timeline but I don’t think it’s going to be long,” he said. “Not even close to what it was before. Hopefully a couple more days.”

Simmons was hitting .298 with three home runs when he sustained the first ankle sprain on May 20. After returning, he appeared in 28 of the Angels’ 30 games, starting all but five. He batted .230 with two home runs before injuring the ankle again.

It would be tempting, based on those results, to conclude Simmons rushed back prematurely. Yet the 29-year-old shortstop said he wouldn’t give his rehab more time if he could do it over again – even with the benefit of hindsight.

Ausmus agreed that Simmons wasn’t rushed.

“We felt like he was ready,” Ausmus said. “He felt like he was ready. Medical staff felt like he was ready. Whether they’re related or not, I can’t really say.”

As for this injury, Simmons said, “it’s hard to go into details because I don’t understand it exactly. From what I understand the bone bruise I had is still a little aggravated. It kind of makes the bone a little weak. There’s a small pull, like on the tendon, something pulled a little bone off and that caused that pain. I don’t know if the pain is from the strain or the bruise. I’m not sure but it’s feeling better.”

Ausmus said that Simmons’ latest ankle sprain is not necessarily related to his first.

“It seems to be on the opposite side of the ankle,” Ausmus said. “If they are related, then I guess it’s on me for playing him but I really can’t speak as to whether they are. Maybe being cautious, being overly cautious, is the only thing you can do.”

INJURY UPDATES

Justin Anderson was placed on the 10-day injured list with an upper trap strain. The Angels recalled Jose Rodriguez from Triple-A Salt Lake to take Anderson’s place in the bullpen.

Anderson was unavailable during the Angels’ final two games in Boston because of the injury, Ausmus said. The IL stint is retroactive to Saturday.

“We thought it was a day-to-day thing, but it hasn’t gotten better the last two days so we decided to just put him on the IL,” Ausmus said.

Anderson, a 26-year-old right-hander, is 3-0 with a 5.01 earned-run average in 47 appearances. Rodriguez, a 23-year-old right-hander,  made his second appearance with the big league club Monday. He was 3-4 with a 6.55 ERA between Double-A and Triple-A this season. …

Pitcher Felix Peña will have surgery on his right knee Friday, Ausmus said. Pena tore his anterior cruciate ligament on Aug. 3 covering first base in a game against the Cleveland Indians, ending his season. …

Pitchers Noé Ramírez (viral infection) and Luke Bard (right triceps contusion) are scheduled to throw simulated games at Angel Stadium on Tuesday. Ramírez can be activated from the IL at any time, but Ausmus said that decision won’t be made before Wednesday. Bard is eligible to return Thursday. …

Keynan Middleton will pitch Tuesday for Class-A Inland Empire, his second appearance since he re-started his minor league rehabilitation assignment. Ausmus said Middelton’s rehab will transfer to Triple-A Salt Lake following the game.

2020 VISION

The Angels will begin the 2020 season on the road, March 26 against the Astros and end at home, Sept. 27 against the A’s.

The 162-game schedule features 20 interleague matchups – four against the Dodgers and 16 against National League East opponents. The Angels host the Nationals (May 11-13), Marlins (June 9-10) and Mets (Aug. 18-20). They will play road games in Miami (April 14-15), Atlanta (July 3-5) and Philadelphia (17-19).

The Dodgers visit Angel Stadium on July 10-11. The Angels visit Dodger Stadium on Aug. 25-26.
